Breaking down the Beatitudes Lesson 2 Matthew 5:6

Explaining the Beatitudes:

Jesus is the train and we (Christians) are the caboose and everything in the middle is the beatitudes.

Background:

The start of the Sermon on the Mount. This is the first detailed message Christ spoke to His disciples.

Explanation of the diagram:

The beatitudes are broken down into three different sets.

· The foundation- the bottom level… the start of growing in your faith

· The Factor- everything hinges on one beatitude that determines if you get to the last level

· The fruits- if you trust the Lord in the previous stage, you will see fruit in your Christian life.

The first three: The foundation level

1. The Poor in Spirit

2. Those who Mourn

3. The Meek

One big factor: The Factor level

The first three: The foundation level

1. The Poor in Spirit

2. Those who Mourn

3. The Meek

One big factor: The Factor level

1. Thirst and Hunger

I. The conviction of the factor stage- “blessed”

1. Jesus Christ is reminding us that we are not just tolerated, but we are celebrated.

2. Jesus is saying that our conviction should be one that reminds us that we are blessed

o The beatitudes are not what we have, but who we are in Christ- 2 Corinthians 5:17

II. The condition of the factor stage v’s 6 “hunger and thirst

1. This beatitude has to do with ambition or what drives you

a. The question is, do you thirst and hunger after the things of God? Do you put your ego and preferences to the side in order to thirst and hunger after Christ’s ambition?

2. I believe that Christ is illustrating to His disciples that they should thirst and hunger in the spiritual side of things just as they thirst and hunger in physical side of things.

3. The factor stage hinges on how much we thirst and hunger for Christ.

a. It’s common sense. If a plant has the ample supply of water and nutrients, then it will yield more fruit.

b. If we thirst and hunger after Christ, then we will make it to the fruits stage.

III. The conclusion of the factor stage- (the results) “we shall be filled

1. The condition of the thirsting and hungering stage is so strong that it helps shed light on the conclusion stage.

a. “We shall be filled” is so intense the fathom that it takes on a whole different meaning.

i. Think about being so thirsty on a hot summer day and no water is around. Then a glass of cold water is placed in front of you and you are able to enjoy it. That is what this beatitude is talking about. This beatitude is means to fill you in a pleasant way.
